Boulder County is a scenic and highly desirable region in north-central Colorado, with the city of Boulder as its seat and several prominent towns such as Longmont, Lafayette, and Nederland. Founded in 1871, the county sits at the base of the Front Range and has a rich history in mining, and then as a university town and tech/innovation hub. Housing types vary widely from historic charming homes in Boulder city and the older suburbs, to luxury mountain homes, to newer planned subdivisions in the valley and foothills, and even mountain cabins in the more remote areas. Given its proximity to Denver (just a short drive) and the quality of life, median existing home sale prices tend to be well above state averages (often US$700,000+ and many homes in the million-plus range depending on town and lot size). For building a custom home on land, lot plus build could easily run US$350–450+ per sq ft in prime locations, with large lots commanding premium. The area is mostly suburban/urban in the valley with more rural/mountain in the ridges and hills. If you want access to urban amenities yet a foothills/nature feeling, Boulder County is strong—but affordability is limited relative to many rural counties.
